From Teacher to Entrepreneur: How Catherine Maina Is Building a Legacy Through NRS DT Sacco.

BY MARION MUTHOKA

In the heart of Uthiru, Nairobi, a remarkable woman is building more than just rental houses, she’s building a legacy. Catherine Maina, a teacher by profession, has taken her passion for education and financial independence to the next level, thanks to her journey with NRS DT Sacco.

A Journey Rooted in Passion and Faith.

Catherine began her teaching career in 1997. For eight years, she poured her heart into educating young minds. But her journey took a transformative turn when, through the encouragement of her church bishop and unwavering faith in God, she was inspired to start her own school.

With no background in business but a strong calling to serve, Catherine started the Patmos Montessori school in a rental premise. Over the years, this institution has grown significantly and now offers education up to Grade 9. Her story is a testament to how passion, faith, and the right support system can birth impactful ventures.

Overcoming Financial Challenges with NRS DT Sacco

Before joining NRS DT Sacco, Catherine faced numerous financial challenges. Like many budding entrepreneurs, she encountered financial institutions that demanded proof of income she simply didn’t have. This made it difficult to grow her dreams.

However, everything changed when she walked into the NRS DT Sacco offices in Kikuyu, a visit prompted by years of her mother, a long-time NRS member, speaking highly of the Sacco. Catherine was drawn to NRS’s unique approach: rather than emphasizing income statements, they focused on financial discipline and transaction history.

Through NRS, Catherine accessed financial services tailored to her needs:

Mjengo Loan – which she used to construct a three-bedroom rental house in Uthiru as an investment for her mother.

School Financing – enabling her to acquire vital assets like a school bus, lifting heavy financial burdens from her shoulders.

Share-based Loans – an innovative offering that allows members to borrow against their shares and even pay back loans using share value.

She emphasizes how NRS provided not just funding, but flexible repayment plans, personalized support, and a reliable partnership, qualities she had not found in traditional financial institutions.

Diversifying into Farming and Real Estate

Catherine is not only an educator and school owner. She has also ventured into dairy farming and construction, building a future that is both sustainable and diversified. Her rental project in Uthiru is just the beginning, she’s laying the foundation for generational wealth, inspired by her commitment to her family and community.

A Champion for Financial Discipline and Youth Empowerment

One of Catherine’s key messages as a beneficiary of mjengo loan, is the importance of financial discipline. She believes that loans are not to be feared, but embraced, with the right mindset and responsibility.

So far, she has brought over 50 new members to NRS DT Sacco, becoming an ambassador for youth empowerment and smart financial management. She urges young people to consider Saccos like NRS, where trust, support, and long-term development go hand-in-hand.

“NRS is reliable. They walk with you. They understand your journey and give you the support you need to grow,” Catherine says.

Looking Ahead: A Future with NRS DT Sacco

Catherine sees her future intertwined with NRS DT Sacco. From ongoing construction projects to future business expansions, she’s confident that NRS will remain her trusted financial partner.

Lastly, during this year’s Customer Service Week, she extends her heartfelt wishes to all NRS members and staff, appreciating their dedication and service.
